Dermot McIlroy was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1963. His father was a carpenter and his mother played piano. The combination of both was to influence Dermot in later life. He trained as a carpenter and wood machinist for eleven years before joining the Lowden Guitar Co. in 1990, and then went on to form his own company McIlroy in 2000.
